Classes Nursery through 8th grade
Our school serves 423 girls and boys in nursery through eighth grade. Each grade level, has approximately 25-30 students who are heterogeneously grouped. All levels of ability are reflected in our student population. We are a multicultural school with over 40 nations represented throughout the student body. A strong sense of family pervades our school community.
St. Sebastian School is located close to the geographical center of New York City. Woodside is an exciting, dynamic and perhaps the most ethnically community in New York City. For more than 80 years, this Catholic School of Excellence, has prepared young people to move into leadership positions and service in the Church, national and local governments, medicine, education, finance, business and many other professions. A public library, park, and several forms of public transportation are within walking distance of the school. We have new soundproof windows to keep out city noise. Most of the students walk or carpool to school, but others take the train or private buses. Crossing guards are at nearby intersections in the morning arrival and afternoon dismissal times.

Computer Center
St. Sebastian School offers computer education for students in Pre-K through Grade 8. Each student attends computer class at least once per week. The computer center is equipped with twenty-eight computers. Over the course of three years, in keeping with our Technology plan, all computers were replaced with state-of-the-art equipment. The center has two high-speed laser printers, one color and one black and white. The center is connected to the Internet by means of a high speed T1 line. The room is air-conditioned and spacious, allowing the students and teachers comfortable, easy access to the computers.
In addition to the computers in the center, there are two COWS (Computers on Wheels), which contain laptop computers that teachers use with their students. The laptops on the mobile carts can be easily moved to various classrooms and teachers use them to enhance their curriculum as well as facilitate student research. These carts are set up for wireless communication, which gives them the ability to "go online".
The Diocesan Computer Curriculum Guidelines are followed, providing students with an opportunity to learn practical computer skills as well as integrating computer software into their overall academic subject instruction. Students are taught how to use applications that are approprriate for their grade level. The computer center has a wide range of the most current educational programs available, including MS Office; Word, Excel, Publisher, Power Point as well as other applications for multimedia presentations. Many computer sessions involve both the computer instructor and the classroom teacher. Together they design projects that apply and extend subject curriculum by integrating the students' knowledge in a range of ciurricular areas and reinforcing basic computer skills.
Classroom teachers are encouraged to use the computer center to enhance classroom instruction, to facilitate drill and exercise needs, and to conduct research. The center is equipped with a projector.
We are currently in the second year of a three year Diocesan grant involving the use of Symphony Math, an internet based learning system, which helps early childhood students develop a solid foundation in number conceptualization and math operations. SymphonyMath systematically helps students improve math concepts, fluency, procedures and applications. Students use the program in the computer center as well as their classrooms. Classrooms are equipped with projectors and screens to support the program.
We also have a set of twenty-six digital cameras that are used by teachers with their classes to enhance the curriculum.
During the summer of 2008, the computer center was completely remodeled, new furniture was purchased and interactive SmartBoards were installed in the Computer Center and in the Science lab. This will truly keep us on the cutting edge of technology.
Physical Education
Development of your physical skills is an important part of your education. Our goal is to build up healthy, alert, and physically fit individuals through exercise, games and other learning experiences. You must report to gym class with the proper gym uniform and sneakers. Students are expected to be present for all classes and participate unless medically excused. Gym class rules and regulations are set down and explained by the physical education teacher. They are for your safety and the safety of your classmates. They are to be strictly followed. Chewing candy or gum is never allowed during gym class as it is a safety hazard.
Students in the primary grades are encouraged to develop self-expression and body awareness through rhythm and movements skills. The students are involved in low games of organization and lead-up games that further allow students to build endurance, flexibility, strength, basic loco motor skills, and the understanding of rules.
In the intermediate grades students begin to understand the concepts and purposes of individual and team sports. This is achieved through the execution of skills, coordination, teamwork and ability to follow directions and regulations. Our students participate in basketball, dodge ball, soccer, wiffleball, table tennis, and hockey.
In the upper grades students participate in individual team sports such as basketball, hockey, Lacrosse, prison ball, soccer, and wiffleball. Students also participate in lifetime, and table tennis.
Written and skill tests are administered to measure knowledge of terminology, rules, and performance. Students are asked to read magazines and newspapers to keep current of sports, trends, and to interpret box scores of most sports.
Library
In June 2007, the Library was refurbished and now includes state of the art technology to enhance curriculum based research projects on all grade levels.

Our library is a place where the children can borrow books and read without any disturbances. Our reference material ranges from encyclopedias, and atlases, to almanacs. Nursery, Pre-K, and Kindergarten visit our library for story time. Students in Grades 1-4 can borrow books are assisted in research projects. Students in Grades 5-8 can use our library computers, which are linked via high-speed modem to the Internet to facilitate their research projects.
Through the continued efforts of our librarian, Mrs. Nancy O'Melia, we continue to receive excellent new books donated by the publishers and parents. In addition, we receive a grant from New York State, which will be used to purchase reference books. These reference books will help to expand our children's reading abilities. We ask the students to submit a review of the books they read during the summer and during the school year so we may expand the diversity of our books. These books will be shared with all of our students. The students may come to the library at any time with the permission of their teacher.
We have installed a program called the "Librarian's Edge". This allow our students and teachers to access information from the library computer station. Remember, reading is the key to the future.
